Lemon Ginger Turmeric Wellness Shots
Wellness shots are everywhere right now, lined up in the cooler at every grocery store and smoothie bar for $4 or $5 each. The good news is you can make a whole week’s worth at home in about 10 minutes with a blender, a few lemons and fresh roots. These little shots are fiery, zesty and wake you up better than a second cup of coffee. Pour one first thing in the morning as a simple daily ritual to start your day clean.
The black pepper secret: Always add a pinch of black pepper. Piperine in black pepper greatly increases how much curcumin from turmeric your body absorbs, and a little healthy fat (like a drop of coconut oil) helps too.
Ingredients
- ✓ 4 ounces fresh ginger root (about a 5 inch piece), scrubbed and roughly chopped
- ✓ 2 ounces fresh turmeric root, scrubbed and chopped (or 2 teaspoons ground turmeric)
- ✓ Juice of 4 lemons (about ¾ cup)
- ✓ 1 cup filtered water or unsweetened coconut water
- ✓ 1 tablespoon raw apple cider vinegar (optional)
- ✓ ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ✓ 1 teaspoon coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil
- ✓ A pinch of cayenne and a few drops of liquid stevia or monk fruit, if you like
No need to peel
Organic ginger and turmeric only need a good scrub. The skin is thin and blends right in. Wear gloves or wash your hands quickly, because fresh turmeric stains.
How to Make It
- 1Prep the rootsScrub the ginger and turmeric well and chop into small pieces so your blender can handle them.
- 2BlendAdd the ginger, turmeric, lemon juice, water, apple cider vinegar, black pepper and coconut oil to a high-speed blender. Blend on high for 60 to 90 seconds until completely smooth.
- 3StrainPour through a fine mesh strainer or nut milk bag set over a bowl, pressing to squeeze out every drop. Save the pulp for soups or tea.
- 4SeasonStir in the cayenne and sweetener to taste. Start small, the shots should be bold and spicy.
- 5Bottle and chillPour into small glass bottles or a jar and refrigerate. Shake before pouring a 1 to 2 ounce shot each morning.

- Turmeric: Contains curcumin, one of the most studied plant compounds for supporting a healthy inflammatory response.*
- Lemon: Bright vitamin C and a fresh, clean taste that makes this an easy habit to keep.
- Black pepper: Helps your body absorb far more of the curcumin from the turmeric.
Dr. Colbert’s Detox Tips
Start small. If you are new to ginger shots, begin with 1 ounce. They are strong, and some people do better taking them with breakfast.
Use fresh roots when you can. Look for firm, smooth ginger and turmeric in the produce section or at an Asian or international market.
Make it a ritual. Pair your morning shot with a few minutes of prayer or Scripture reading before the day gets busy.
✦ From Dr. Colbert’s Table
A morning shot takes 10 seconds, but the quiet moment around it can set the tone for the whole day. As you care for your body, take time to care for your soul, too, and invite God into the first moments of your morning.
“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.” (3 John 1:2, NKJV)
Go Green
Add Fermented Greens to Your Morning
Dr. Colbert’s Fermented Green Supremefood uses fully fermented grasses and vegetables for easy digestion, nutrient absorption and daily energy.*
Storage
Keep the shots in a sealed glass jar or bottles in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Shake well before each pour, since the roots settle. For longer storage, freeze in ice cube trays for up to 3 months.
