Good health is rarely built in one dramatic moment. It is built in ordinary days: the glass of water you drink before coffee, the walk after dinner, the hour of sleep you protect, the worry you hand over in prayer.
Dr. Don Colbert, MD has spent more than four decades helping patients get well, and his book The Seven Pillars of Health brings that experience down to seven foundations. When they are strong, the body has what it needs to heal, repair and thrive. When one is weak, everything else has to work harder.
This starter guide gives you one page for each pillar: why it matters, three simple steps to begin this week, and a verse to carry with you. You do not need to do it all at once. Pick one pillar, start small, and build from there.
Water
Start this week
- Drink a full glass of clean, filtered water when you wake up, before coffee or breakfast.
- Keep a refillable glass or stainless bottle with you and sip steadily through the day.
- Use your body as a guide: pale yellow urine usually means you are drinking enough.
Sleep
Start this week
- Choose a regular bedtime and wake time, and keep them on weekends too.
- Put screens away 30 to 60 minutes before bed and keep your bedroom cool, dark and quiet.
- Cut off caffeine by early afternoon so it is out of your system by bedtime.
Living Food
Start this week
- Fill half your plate with vegetables at lunch and dinner.
- Swap one packaged snack a day for a whole food, like an apple with almonds.
- Read labels and choose foods with short ingredient lists you recognize.
Exercise
Start this week
- Take a 10 minute walk after one meal each day, then build up from there.
- Add simple strength moves two or three times a week: chair stands, wall push-ups, carrying groceries.
- Work toward about 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, the amount most health guidelines recommend.
Detoxification
Start this week
- Eat fiber every day from vegetables, berries, beans, chia or flax to keep things moving.
- Store and heat food in glass instead of plastic, and filter your drinking water.
- Sweat regularly through exercise, and choose fewer processed foods, sugars and alcohol.
Supplements
Start this week
- Start with the basics many physicians discuss, such as a quality multivitamin, vitamin D and omega-3s.
- Ask your doctor to check key numbers, like vitamin D, before adding more.
- Choose reputable, third-party tested products and take them consistently with meals.
Coping with Stress
Start this week
- Pause three times a day for slow breathing: in for four counts, out for six.
- Write down three things you are grateful for each night.
- Practice forgiveness, and bring your worries to God in prayer rather than carrying them alone.
