Sluggish Thyroid? Top 7 Keto Zone Foods to Improve Thyroid Function

Do you suspect you have a sluggish thyroid?

It’s more common than many people think.

In fact, there are entire groups of people with latent or subclinical hypothyroidism (sluggish but still in the normal reference ranges on labs). Many in these groups go undiagnosed and untreated.

According to a review published in 2017, “The prevalence of latent/subclinical hypothyroidism is between 3% and 10%, according to epidemiologic studies that have been carried out in the USA, the United Kingdom, and Denmark” (1).

Unfortunately, there are many consequences to a sluggish thyroid. Acutely, you may experience symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, constipation, muscle weakness, and sensitivity to cold.

Ultimately, it may affect your overall health.

There are thyroid hormone receptors in virtually every tissue of the body. When the thyroid is sluggish, it may manifest in many different ways. It may affect fertility, cardiovascular health, metabolism, kidney function, and more (2, ).

And, hypothyroidism is more common as we age. In fact, it is among the most frequent chronic diseases in the elderly (4).

What can you do to naturally improve a sluggish thyroid? Here are the top 7 foods to improve thyroid function.

Eggs: Eggs are a great source of protein, and 2 important minerals for the thyroid: iodine and selenium. When eggs replace refined carbohydrates (an egg breakfast vs. a cereal breakfast) it can improve fat burn and weight loss for the day. Since iodine and selenium are often deficient in those with hypothyroid, eggs can improve thyroid function.

Seaweed Kelp, Shellfish, Oysters: These ocean plants and animals are great foods to improve thyroid function. First, they are a good natural sources of iodine and can help prevent deficiencies that disturb thyroid function. You can typically find seaweed kelp at your local health food store or in supplements (see below). High Omega-3 Fats such as Wild-Caught Fish and Seeds: Omega-3s, especially from wild-caught fish and fish oil supplements are great sources of DHA and EPA. These two primary omega-3 fats reduce inflammation in our bodies, improve metabolism, and improve thyroid function and hormone balance. What’s more, wild caught salmon is a good source of selenium.

Plant-based omega-3 fats from chia seeds and hemp seeds can also support thyroid function. Not only do they contain ALA, a fatty acid that can be converted to DHA and EPA, their fibers can improve digest which is also often sluggish with hypothyroid.

Omega-3s may also protect against hypothyroid-induced cognitive decline according to a recent lab study (5).

Medium Chain Triglycerides: These special fats are easily metabolized and improve brain function, energy, hormone balance, and metabolism.  In fact, their benefit lies in providing a non-sugary, non-starchy efficient energy source. Medium chain triglycerides are a direct energy source for the cells and brain. Since fatigue is a hallmark of hypothyroid, non-sugary energy sources can improve health.

Gut Healthy Probiotic Foods: Keeping your gut healthy is one key to energy balance, reduced inflammation, and balanced hormones. Probiotics and fiber provide healthy gut bacteria and fuel for gut cells. In fact, more and more evidence piles up that gut cells have a direct influence on metabolism, energy, brain health, immune function, and more. If you’re feeling sluggish, look to probiotics and fibers such as these living chia seeds to improve gut health and energy.

High-quality Clean Water — Water is incredibly important to every system in the body, and a sluggish thyroid can be affected by additives, bacteria, and toxins in tap water. If possible, try a high-quality filter to eliminate many toxins. The water can improve digestive function and constipation while preventing fatigue and moodiness. Dehydration, on the other hand, can cause feelings of overwhelm and sluggish digestion.

Hydrolyzed Collagen and Bone broth — The amino acids found in collagen are often not present in modern day diets. The goal of antithyroid medications is to prevent the thyroid from producing excess amounts of hormone(hyperthyroidism). We advise you to consult a physician for your daughter.I hope this helps!

  1. What test should be performed? My doctor does the standard two tests, but I have heard other labs can show better results.
