Oatmeal cookies are the perfect cookie for Autumn and Winter. They are hearty. They are delicious. And, when you use our recipe, they are moderately low-carb, high-protein, and full of beneficial ingredients; healthy oatmeal cookies.

While our recipe does use oats and is not fully Keto Zone, it comes in at only 8 grams of net carbohydrates. This may or may not fit into your diet if you are on Keto Zone. However, if you can fit them and want to include oats, they offer many health benefits.

Here’s how to make our Hearty Healthy Oatmeal Cookies. And, if you’re looking for Keto Zone options, stay tuned. We’ll provide a Keto Zone recipe make-over next week.

Hearty Healthy Oatmeal Cookies

Ingredients

2 1/4 cups old-fashioned rolled oats (gluten-free)

6 Tablespoons coconut oil

2 Tablespoons butter (organic, grass-fed if possible)

1 cup erythritol

2 egg whites (about 1/3 cup)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

4 scoops Hydrolyzed Collagen Powder (use any flavor for extra protein)

1/2 cup 70%+ cocoa chips (optional)

Instructions

First, preheat the oven to 350°F.

Line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper or spray them with cooking spray. Set aside.

In a medium bowl, mix together oats, flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, collagen powder, and salt. Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, beat together oil, butter, sugar, eggs whites, and vanilla until fluffy and smooth.

Slowly add in the oat mixture, stirring to combine. Add and lightly stir in cocoa chips.

Using a spoon, drop a tablespoonful cookie dough on sheet, about 2 inches apart. Press down with a fork.

Bake for ~10 minutes, or until golden brown. Don’t worry if cookies seem a bit soft, they will harden up. Don’t overbake.

Remove from the oven and let cool on sheet for about 5 minutes. Transfer to wire rack and allow to cool completely.

Nutrition info per 1 cookie with coconut sugar and without cocoa chips: 125 calories, 4 grams fat, 9 gm carbs, 1 gram fiber (8 net grams carbs), 6 grams protein.

Health Benefits of Oats and Their Place in Keto Zone Eating

I’ll be honest: it’s tough to fit oats into Keto Zone eating.

First of all, technically, they are a grain. However, as an ancient, intact grain, they do have many redeeming qualities (read more below). And especially if they are gluten-free, they are not as inflammatory in the gut.

But, the toughest part of oats and Keto Zone is that they simply contain a lot of carbohydrates.

Just 1/4 cup of oats contains about 20 grams of net carbohydrates. When used in a recipe like the one above, each cookie contains just under 1.5 tablespoons of oats, or about 7-8 net grams of carbs. If you’re only eating 25-30 grams of net carbs in a day, this may be too much for you (1).

However, if you are going to include small amounts of oats, they are a superior grain and a wise choice. Since this site supports both overall healthy anti-inflammatory eating and Keto Zone eating, there’s room for many types of recipes.

As for this recipe: What do you get in that 1.5 tablespoons of oats per cookie? Turns out, quite a bit.

Grains and Oats: Whole vs. 100% Whole vs. Intact

First, let’s dive into the terminology.

Grains are often labeled as whole, 100% whole, or intact.

If a product is a whole grain, it’s anyone’s guess as to the percentage of whole grains vs. refined. Could be 10/90, could be 50/50.

If a product is 100% whole grain, 100% of the grains used were whole in the beginning. Then, they were ground or processed down. This is not to say they are harmful, it’s just that they will digest and affect the body differently than if they were intact at the time of consumption.

Intact grains are grains, usually ancient varieties, in which you can see the entire grain when you eat it. Oats are an intact grain. They haven’t been altered or ground in grain-form, you can see them.

Another example of an “intact grain” is quinoa (sometimes it’s considered a seed).

Health Benefits of Oats

Oats and our Healthy Oatmeal Cookies have a lot of good nutrition for our bodies. They contain:

Beta-glucan: Beta-glucan is a unique and special fiber that reduces cholesterol levels, helps prevent heart disease, and significantly enhances the human immune system’s response to bacterial infection. In fact, Beta-glucan supports neutrophil health and aides in their navigation to infection sites (neutrophils are the most abundant type of non-specific immune cell). In addition, it has beneficial effects on diabetes and kidney disease (2).

Unique Antioxidants: Oat antioxidants, called avenanthramides, help prevent free radicals from damaging LDL cholesterol, and thereby reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and arterial plaques. What’s more, they are currently being studied as anti-cancer nutrients (3).

Oat Bran Fibers: Oat bran fibers have been found to be beneficial to menopausal women, supporting metabolism, exhibiting anti-breast cancer benefits, and reducing cardiovascular disease risk (4).

Lignans: Oat lignans feed our healthy bacteria and protect against heart disease. First, they support digestion, immune function, hormonal, and whole-body health by supporting probiotic health. Then, they also play a role in fighting cholesterol plaques via digestion and antioxidants.

Bottom Line

Should you include oats in your diet? If you tolerate them and can fit them into your carbohydrate goals, then yes, they are a very healthy food choice. If you want to stay in the Keto Zone and cannot fit them, this is okay as well and you should stay tuned for an upcoming “oatmeal-cookie-like” Keto recipe.

Oats are an intact grain that can benefit many parts of the body. If you include grains, oats are a great choice and offer incredible nutrition.

If you’re experiencing hair loss, you may have a nutrient deficiency or condition causing it.

Hair loss can result from many issues, including malnutrition, medical conditions, stress, damage to hair follicles, and more.

While it’s traditionally thought of as an issue for men, many women experience hair loss and thinning hair as well.

In this multi-part series on hair loss, we’ll cover the cycle of hair growth and loss, the signs and conditions, and nutrient deficiencies that cause hair loss.

Hair Follicles: A Mini Organ?

Believe it or not, hair follicles are considered mini-organs that go through its own growth cycle, starting at an embryonic stage. Many nutrients play a role in the biochemical reactions allowing a follicle to move into induction, organogenesis, and cytodifferentiation stages (1, 2).

Lack of certain nutrients, or conditions that impair their metabolism, is a substantial cause of hair loss.

Types of Hair Loss

Not all hair loss situations are the same. For some people, hair loss as a gradual, overall thinning. Others individuals experience bald spots, and others have handfuls of hair falling out. And of course, some incidents of hair loss are usually due to medical interventions, like chemotherapy.

There’s even different types of hair loss among these patterns of thinning.

All hair loss is called alopecia, which comes in 4 main types. These include:

Androgenetic alopecia: is female-pattern baldness or hair loss caused by genetics or family history. For women, androgenetic alopecia is the leading cause of hair loss and usually occurs between the ages of 12 and 40 years. It’s usually not limited to the hairline or a specific bald spot on women, but an overall thinning.

Alopecia areata: is a patchy hair loss, which happens suddenly on the head or body, and usually starts with one bald spot.

Cicatricial alopecia: occurs when scars form on the head or body. Scarring damages the area’s hair follicles and replaces them with scar tissue. Hair doesn’t grow back on the scar tissue, and leaves a bald spot instead.

Traumatic alopecias: generally caused by hairstyling. They can occur due to chemical treatments, blow dryers, straighteners, dyes, and more.

Nutrient Deficiencies Causing Hair Loss (#1-6)

Along with conditions, there are also many nutrient deficiencies that can cause hair loss. From vitamins to minerals to macronutrients, our bodies depend on nutrition to replace and grow different tissues in our bodies. Hair is no exception. Here are the top 6, out of 12, nutrient deficiencies that cause hair loss (6 more to come in Part 2).

1. Protein

While those on a Western Diet seldom experience protein deficiency, it certainly can happen and affects hair growth. If you’re using an unhealthy low-nutrient detox over many days, crash dieting, or fasting too much, you can experience protein malnutrition, which results to hair loss.

Sudden decreased protein intake can result in both acute and chronic hair loss (3).

If using Keto Zone, which is low-carb, moderately low-protein, and high-fat, make sure you’re still getting 40+ grams of protein each day. For example, if eating 1,500 calories or so, you can stay in the Keto Zone with:

1,125 calories fat (125 grams, 75%)

120 calories from carbs (30 grams, 8%)

255 calories from protein (64 grams, 17%)

As long as you include a high-quality protein source at one meal and supplemental proteins, such as Hydrolyzed Collagen or the Keto Zone Shake, at another time, you can easily get enough to resolve any low-protein hair loss.

2. Iron

Iron deficiency is quite common worldwide; it’s the world’s most common nutritional deficiency. Iron deficiency is also a well-known cause of hair loss.

How does iron deficiency cause hair loss?

The exact answer remains unknown. However, low iron disrupts the cells in hair follicles’ ability to rapidly divide and grow (4). What’s more, iron may regulate one or more of the genes identified in hair follicles (5, 6).

Animal studies have shown resolution of iron deficiency leads to restoration of hair growth (7).

Women, vegans, athletes, those who live at high altitudes, individuals with digestive disorders, on high levels of turmeric and ginger supplements, and those taking antacids are all at risk for iron deficiency.

If you suspect you have low iron, you can talk to your doctor and get your serum ferritin levels checked. Optimal serum ferritin is 50-70 ug/dL.

You can also eat red meat from cattle, bison, elk, and venison several times per week. You should also cook with cast iron cookware. Use iron supplements if needed and recommended by your doctor.

3. Zinc

Zinc is an essential mineral responsible for hundreds of reactions in the body, like protein synthesis, cell division, and hair follicle morphogenesis (8, 9, 10).

Signs of zinc deficiency include diarrhea, poor immune function, and delayed wound healing. Abnormalities in taste and smell may occur.

Typically, individuals with digestive disorders, cancer, pregnant women, patients with alcoholism, those taking certain medications including blood pressure meds, and vegans may be at higher risk (11, 12).

One study found that all 312 participants in hair loss groups had statistically lower zinc concentrations as compared to 30 healthy controls (13). Luckily, hair loss patients with low serum zinc have restored hair growth with supplementation (14).

If you suspect a zinc deficiency, talk to your doctor. You may resolve the deficiency with a multivitamin or you can take zinc supplement of just 30-50 mg zinc, alongside 1-2 mg copper per day intake. It’s important to look at all supplements, though, and not consume too much zinc since toxic levels also have detrimental effects.

4. Fatty Acids

If you’re in the Keto Zone, you likely aren’t too low in fatty acids! But, for those who eat a low-fat diet, or those who malabsorp fats, you may have hair thinning trouble.

Typically, inadequate fatty acids result in loss of scalp hair and eyebrows as well as lightening of hair (15,16).

To avoid this, eat healthy fats, including omega-3s, omega-9s from olive oil, avocados, nuts, and more, medium-chain triglycerides from MCT Oil Powder, coconut oil, etc.

5. Selenium

Selenium is a trace mineral that can also impact hair.

How?

Selenium protects hair follicles from oxidative damages and plays a role in follicle morphogenesis.

In fact, animal studies have shown hair growth is limited when selenium is deficient (17). Other studies have shown improvements with supplementation (18).

Many adults are low in selenium, due to over-farming and poor soil conditions. However, the risk is higher if you’re on hemodialysis, have HIV, or malabsorption digestive disorders (19).

If you think you may be deficient, talk to your doctor. Selenium can certainly become toxic from supplements, (20, 21), which can result in generalized hair loss, blistering skin lesions, gastrointestinal symptoms, and memory difficulties.

6. Vitamin D

Hair follicle cycling, or morphogenesis, is an important part of hair growth and maintenance.

Animal studies show vitamin D also plays a vital role in hair production (22). In fact, one study found that low vitamin D resulted in hair loss (23), while others have shown that increased vitamin D increases expression in the roots of hair follicles during growing phases (24).

Human studies have found that participants with hair loss have lower vitamin D levels than controls (25).

A majority of adults may be low in vitamin D; work and life indoors, winter months, fat malabsorptions, and ark skin increase the risk of low vitamin D (26).

If you are low in vitamin D, as indicated by a total vitamin D lab result, you can increase it with sun exposure and supplementation. Generally, taking 1000 IU Vitamin D3 per 25 pounds body weight, each day, for six weeks is an efficient therapeutic plan. Retest after six weeks.

Bottom Line

Stay tuned for Part 2 and 3 in this series of Conditions and Nutrient Deficiencies Causing Hair Loss. These first 6 nutrients are important for hair health, growth, and overall wellness. As you eat foods each day, look to a variety of whole foods that provide essential nutrients, including healthy fats, whole-food proteins, nuts, seeds, and vegetables. You can also supplement when needed.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when first adopting a ketogenic diet for weight loss is eating too much protein.

A successful ketogenic diet requires strictly limiting carbohydrate consumption and upping the intake of healthy fats. This allows the metabolism to switch from primarily using glucose (sugar) for fuel to primarily using ketones (fat) for fuel.

This is referred to as ketosis. When the cells begin to burn fat for fuel this includes body fat such as the fat around the belly, thighs, and hips.

So to get into ketosis and shed pounds of body fat, you must eat a ketogenic diet which is a low-carb high-fat (LCHF) diet.

But what about protein? Does it matter how much you eat? And what kind of protein is best for maximum weight loss?

Protein and Weight Loss

A common misconception is that a ketogenic diet is high in protein. The reality, however, is that a ketogenic diet is a moderate protein diet, or maybe even more accurately, an adequate protein diet. In fact, too much protein can actually inhibit your body from entering ketosis thus preventing you from experiencing the myriad of benefits of the diet.

There are many reasons why adequate protein consumption is required for success on a ketogenic diet.

Studies have shown that protein is the most satiating macronutrient while carbohydrate is the least satiating. Therefore, if you eat an adequate amount of protein you will feel more satisfied and be more likely to eat less calories.

Protein is also the most important macronutrient for building and maintaining muscle mass. Muscles burn calories 24/7 even when you are not exercising.

Protein and Ketosis

Proteins are the building blocks of life, they provide the body with all of the essential amino acids. But more is not always better.

When first adopting a ketogenic diet, it is easy to replace carbohydrate rich foods such as grains, starches, and sugar with protein rich foods such as meat, nuts, and cheese. To an extent these can be very helpful substitutions, but it is important not to eat excess protein.

A ketogenic diet deprives the body of its glucose stores and begins metabolizing fat and utilizing ketones for fuel. However, in the absence of dietary carbohydrates, there is a process through which the body can actually generate glucose. This is called gluconeogenesis.

Gluconeogenesis

Gluconeogenesis occurs when protein is consumed in excess of what is required for proper function and maintenance of the body. The liver converts the excess amino acids into glucose to be used for energy. Gluconeogenesis can spike your insulin and reduce the levels of ketones in your blood.

So even when strictly adhering to a low carbohydrate diet, blood sugar levels can remain high due to gluconeogenesis. This can lead to symptoms of the keto flu, which happens both during keto adaptation and when ketosis is abruptly interrupted with excessive blood glucose levels.

Gluconeogenesis is not inherently bad, however. Gluconeogenesis is actually an essential process for healthy ketogenic dieting. The body does require very small amounts of glucose for functioning as some cells are unable to use ketones for fuel. If glucose is not obtained through the diet then the body must convert protein to glucose to meet the needs of the cells.

Gluconeogenesis only becomes a problem when large amounts of protein are broken down into sugar. The metabolic process is quite complicated and produces inflammatory byproducts such as free-radicals

How Much Protein is Right for You?

The amount of dietary protein necessary for you can be determined by body weight and activity level. Those who are physically active naturally have higher protein requirements than those with a more sedentary lifestyle.

If your weight is in pounds, multiply it by 0.6 and 1.0 to get the minimum and maximum amount of protein in grams you should eat each day. If your weight is in kilograms, simply multiply it by 1.3 and 2.2 to get the same range. Athletes and those who are physically active should trend towards the higher end of this range while sedentary individuals should stick to the low end.

Other relevant factors include gender (men need more than women) and age. FInding the sweet spot can be challenging as protein is important for maintaining lean muscle mass but too much will likely take you out of ketosis.

Get in The Keto Zone

A successful ketogenic diet will lead to weight loss, increased energy, and enhanced cognitive function. In order to receive these benefits it is imperative to eat an adequate amount of protein. Not too much, not too little.

This can be achieved by eating a diet that consists mostly of non-starchy vegetables by weight but with most of the calories coming from healthy fats such as avocado, olive oil, grass-fed butter, coconut oil, MCT powder, lard, and tallow. Add in small portions of high quality protein and stop eating when you are full. Healthy sources of protein include grass-fed beef and bison, pasture-raised chicken and turkey, wild game such as venison and elk, wild-caught fish such as sardines and salmon, pasture raised eggs, grass-fed cheese, grass-fed whey protein powder (infrequently in small amounts), and hydrolyzed collagen powder.

If you follow these simple rules you will shed the pounds and feel better than you can have ever imagined!
