Elevate Your Spiritual Growth With These 3 Detox Foods

An often-overlooked aspect of spiritual growth is treating your body as what it was designed to be: a temple for life, love, worship… and health.

While we often need to re-evaluate our spiritual walk in mind and soul, we can detox our bodies at the same time to further deepen our convictions and care for the precious bodies we were given.

This thinking extends back to biblical times and food in the Bible. In the Old Testament, Daniel requested that he and three friends be allowed to eat healthier foods for ten days during a training program under King Nebuchadnezzar.

Low and behold:

At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead.Daniel 1:15-16

By eating like Daniel and his men, you too can nourish and strengthen your body through your walk with Christ.

Whether you feel called to lose weight, reduce stress, uncover food sensitivities, do a modified fast, or reach that spiritual breakthrough you’ve been praying about, these three detox foods can support you in your own spiritual growth.

1. Fruits and Vegetables

Think pure, fresh foods straight from nature. Fresh fruits and vegetables from your local grocery store or farmer’s market are as close to their original design it gets—and packed with life-giving nutrients.

Make these your main focus and fill your plate with the rainbow.

Eat fruits like:

  • Blueberries
  • Avocados
  • Apples
  • Blackberries
  • Raspberries
  • Kiwi
  • Mango
  • Orange
  • Papaya
  • Pears
  • Pineapple
  • Watermelon

Eat vegetables like:

  • Kale
  • Mushrooms
  • Acorn or Spaghetti Squash
  • Asparagus
  • Carrots
  • Broccoli
  • Butternut Squash
  • Cauliflower
  • Gem Squash
  • Mushrooms
  • Okra
  • Parsnip
  • Pumpkin
  • Zucchini
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Celery
  • Chard
  • Lettuce
  • Cabbage

One caveat: Be wary of nightshade vegetables. These can cause inflammation in many people and are best avoided during a spiritual detox.

Avoid these nightshades:

  • Tomatoes
  • White potatoes
  • Eggplants
  • Bell peppers
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Paprika

2. Beans and Legumes

Beans and legumes—such as black beans, chickpeas, white peas, lentils, and peas—are great sources of protein and very high in insoluble fiber, meaning they move through your system easily and support a healthy digestion.

The high fiber can also help you lose weight and may even help control blood sugar and lower cholesterol.

For all of these reasons, beans are a great spiritual detox food.

3. Healthy Fats

Unprocessed plant-based fats like the following support a healthy metabolism, immune system, hormone balance, and many other bodily processes.

  • Avocados
  • Nuts and seeds like flax seeds, chia seeds, almonds, cashews, and walnuts
  • Organic oils like extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, hemp oil, and flaxseed oil
  • Tahini
  • Peanut butter or almond butter

Don’t Forget Supplements

Along with a light diet centered around these foods, Dr. Colbert recommends the following supplements to help eliminate toxins and heavy metals from your body. They’ll support your body in naturally detoxing and healing itself—as our Creator intended.

Inflammatory Foods to Remove

While you fuel your body with the nutrient-rich foods mention above, remove these heavier and inflammatory foods from your diet:

  • Nightshade vegetables
  • Meats, dairy, and eggs
  • Grains (except quinoa and oats)
  • Sugars and foods with added sugars, including smoothies and juices
  • Processed foods like baked goods, sodas, and genetically modified foods

Bottom line: focus on fruits and vegetables, beans, healthy fats, and high-quality supplements while removing foods that cause inflammation or poor health.

Doing so will cleanse your physical body while opening up space for the spiritual growth and detox you seek.
