Recent studies conducted at Harvard Medical School reveals the daily consumption of nuts can reduce the danger of death in men with prostate cancer. Men who participated in the study reduced their risk of dying after prostate cancer diagnosis simply by adding nuts to their menu planning at least five times each week.
Prostate cancer is second to the development of skin cancer in men. It is the second principal cause of death in the United States for men as well. In 2016 over 180,500 men will be diagnosed with cancer and it is estimated more than 26,000 men will die from the ailment. One man in seven will be diagnosed in his lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society.
Reducing the Risk by 1/3
Dr. Bao, the lead researcher, reminds men of the importance to consider the risks involved in developing cancer. During the scientific study, most of the participants ate peanuts which provide protective qualities for the body. Tocopherol (vitamin E) seems responsible for the cancer-fighting properties.
Adding nuts to the diet after diagnosis can significantly reduce the risk of death by one-third, according to the data. The findings were reported in the British Journal of Cancer.
A Healthy Diet
Nuts should be included in the diet for optimal health. The addition of this food can improve insulin sensitivity and decrease the risk of developing diabetes, cancers, and heart diseases. Overall, the decrease of risk in these areas lowers the overall rate of mortality.
Tree nuts offer a broad range of nutrients including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-carcinogenic properties. The consumption of walnuts slows the progression of growth related to the prostate, colon, and kidney cancers.
Simply adding one and one-half ounce (1.5 oz.) each day can provide positive impacts on the health of an individual, according to Ternus (Tree Nut Council Nutrition Research).
Further Investigative Research
The current study shows adding nuts to the diet after prostate cancer diagnosis holds definite health benefits. Further investigation is needed as it relates to prostate cancer preventions. Nut consumption, as a part of a healthy diet, may still improve the overall health of an individual prior to cancer diagnosis.
